Unit 9
[Listen and Write]
Yesterday, the busy city of Hong Kong was hit by Typhoon York, a terrible storm which lasted for 11 hours. The storm caused great damage and at least 80 people were injured. The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No. 10 typhoon signal, the highest warning given for a tropical storm. Nearly 30 trees were uprooted by the powerful winds, which reached up to 150 kmh.
The city was flooded as heavy rains poured down. Roads, schools and businesses were forced to close for the day. Airline and ferry services were also stopped as power failures hit the whole city.
Many homes have also been destroyed and many people are now homeless. The government has set up temporary shelters. Official reports show that more than 100 people are now staying at these shelters.
