1. Concerns of the Year

Language proficiency directly influences pupils¡¦interest and

effectiveness in learning; therefore we place great emphasis on

developing pupils¡¦basic competency in English curriculum.

In order to strengthen pupils¡¦ reading, writing and speaking

abilities, our curriculum focuses on:

(1) ¡§From reading to writing¡¨

Reading and writing are integral parts of the learning process

at all levels. Children who read well usually write well; those

who write well generally read well. It is easy to understand why

our teachers do not teach reading and writing separately. Instead,

we carefully plan how to teach reading and writing coherently.

Using textbooks alone cannot provide adequate practice for

reading and writing, so some teaching materials are especially

tailor-made for polishing students¡¦reading and writing skills.

(2) ¡§Phonics¡¨

Knowing phonics enables children to understand the letter-

to-sound correspondence. It also can help them gain confidence

and competence in pronunciation, spelling and reading. This is

why teaching phonics becomes an important part in our curriculum.

To ensure sufficient time is allocated for phonics learning, we

have planned a 4-week systematic phonics program at the beginning

of the semester in each year.

(3) Fostering reading habits and reading skills

Reading is essential for students to learn English as a foreign

language. They need to have ample input before they can write

and use the language. Thus, we put a lot of effort in fostering

students¡¦reading habits and reading skills. In coming year,

the following measures will put forward:

i: Reading habits

Students are encouraged to spend some time reading English

books and to record the titles in their home assignment book

¡§®a½Ò¥U¡¨ every day. They can choose books according to

their own ability.

Besides this, students are encouraged to challenge themselves

by taking part in the Star Awarding Reading Scheme¡§ºK¬Pp¹º¡¨.

In this scheme, students are encouraged to share their feelings

about the content of the books they have read with the others.

They will be invited to share their opinions during the morning

assembly and be awarded with star badges.

ii: Reading Skills

Teachers will help students to develop their reading skills

during the Reading Time ¡§¦Åª½Ò¡¨and during lessons with

a large variety of activities such as games, discussions and

role plays etc.
